Communications development involves creating mechanisms to broaden public access to information on reforms; strengthening clients’ ability to listen to their constituencies and negotiate with stakeholders; empowering grassroots organizations to achieve a more participatory process; and undertaking communications activities that are grounded in public opinion research.
TPPA’s training in this area focuses on the development of the technical skills necessary for designing effective communication programs and how communication strategies can meet the specific needs of government. Participants receive hands-on experience in such areas as print, traditional broadcast, and Internet media. In addition to reviewing the basic rules of journalism, we explore approaches for appealing to special interest groups while, at the same time, advancing responsible public policies and effectively addressing public expectations.
Media and government accountability are assessed for effectiveness, followed by strategic planning sessions on how to maximize the media vis-à-vis effective two-way communications. Overall, we explore the media’s roles as an educator, communicator and arbiter and analyze the changing role of the media in times of rapid improvements in communications technology as well as times of international crisis. |
